The weekend of the first and second of May, found Lothian 4x4 Response out helping with the Maggies Bike and Hike 2010, the event has the competitors riding a bike over 30 miles and hiking 43 miles over mixed terrain, from Fort William along the Great Glen to Inverness in the north of Scotland.
Three members assisted the event providing both on and off road transport & logistics. They were on duty from 5am Saturday Morning until 10am Sunday morning. We carried out a number of tasks ranging from, simply transporting bike mechanics and spare bikes along the course, transporting water and food supplies to the waterstops/checkpoints, moving larger water bowsers to strategic points to allow the resupply of competitors, to transporting injured competitors to the Redcross assistance points and to simply ensuring competitors new help was about in the off road section's and giving out general encouragement to them.
The group also provided our own VHF comms for the event which allowed us to access the Raynet Repeaters and allowed us to stay in communications with the Event HQ which allowed them to deploy the Lothians 4x4 response assets, promptly and efficiently.
With each Lothian 4x4 Response vehicle completing in excess of 500miles over the short period of the event, the HQ operation certainly appreciated the use of these assets.
The shear grit and determination of the competitors wanting to complete the course, for what is a very worthwhile cause, was most impressive.
The 2010 Maggies Bike and Hike had its biggest ever entry, with 970 people participating in what was the 8th year the event has run.
The team are already looking forward to next years event.
This event being the first event that Lothian 4x4 Response has assisted with and the members involved appreciated that this was a worthwhile training exercise.
