Default Date display format

in the posts, and various other places, dates are being displayed as mm-dd-yy, which is very confusing for us Brits especially when we get to dates like 09-08-10.
(8th September)

Can we have the dates changed to dd-mmm-yy format ? (eg 28-Feb-10)
